Jon R. Shafer, 73, of Chesterfield, was surrounded by his family and friends when he went home to be with the Lord on January 16,2016, after a brief illness.

Jon was born August 23, 1942 in Anderson, He was a1960 graduate of Anderson High School. He received his Elementary Education degree from Ball State University. He was a Wesleyan missionary to the Native Americans at Brainerd Indian School, Hot Springs, South Dakota from 1979-1986. Jon also was principal at El Monte Christian in El Monte, California. He was an active member of North Anderson Wesleyan Church.

Jon was a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his son, David (Marsann);daughter, Mary Shafer; best friend, Rev. Eddie (Julie) Purciful; aunt, Betty(Jim) Zerhung; brother-in-law, Richard (Leah) Jackson; three sisters-in-law,Bonnie (John) Moser; Kathleen (Mike) Yauncey, and Mary Lou (Rev. Michael)Konkle; grandchildren, Andrew Shafer and Emily Shafer; several nieces and nephew; and grand puppy, Jackson, who he adored.

Jon was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Ann(Jackson) Shafer; and father and mother, Ralph and Hazel (Lytle) Shafer.

The funeral service will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, at North Anderson Wesleyan Church, 1947 East 240 North, Anderson, with Revs. Michael Konkle and Eddie Purciful officiating. Burial is at Anderson Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Anderson Weslyan Church.
