Bonnie Kaye Smartz of Indianapolis passed away peacefully on April 26, 2021. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends. Bonnie was born on May 21, 1944 in Indianapolis to the late William and Leah (Robbins) Powell.
She graduated from Washington High School in 1962 and Ball State University in 1966. Bonnie was employed at Manual High School as a Family and Consumer Science Teacher until her retirement in 2006.
She was married to David Allen Smartz until his death in 2007. In addition her parents, husband David Smartz, brother William Russell Powell, and grandson Jordan Dell preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sister, Phyllis (Ray) Fuller; brother Max (Diane) Powell; son, Eric (Melissa) Averitt; daughter, Christine (Ed) Schneider; step-daughters, Kim (Walt Smithers) Smartz; Jennifer (Scott) Dell; and grandchildren: Anna and Kate Averitt; Jack Schneider; Decatur, Dominick, and Donovan Dell; Cody, Tyler, and Brooklynn Smithers.
Bonnie’s life-long love and dedication was to her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved to read and was a great cook, teacher, and listener. Bonnie was always happy to help and she gave the gift of laughter and unconditional love to those who knew her.
Private family service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.
