Carl L. Allspaw

Carl Lester Allspaw died peacefully Tuesday morning December 10, 2019 at the Bickford Senior Living Center of Carmel. Carl was born May 12, 1935 in Indianapolis to Normal and Chloe (Whitehurst) Allspaw. He was the youngest of four boys. Carl spent his boyhood years in Indianapolis, and fondly remembers Indianapolis in the 1940’s, including train rides downtown from the east side for shopping at the department stores. He then moved to Easton, PA where he attended Easton High School and then went on to Lafayette College in Easton, earning a degree in Engineering. Carl served as an Army officer stationed at Fort Bragg, NC and in the Army Reserves.

Carl returned to Indianapolis and joined his brother Rex working for Eli Lilly and Company. Carl spent 37 years with Lilly as a mechanical engineer, traveling around the world. Carl was an avid photographer and gardener. He enjoyed golf, the Indianapolis Colts, and attending the Indy 500. He enjoyed a full retirement, including traveling with his family and lots of time with 10 grandchildren. Carl was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, serving as an usher, on the sports and education committees and also coached little league baseball at Lawrence Park.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11am on Monday, December 16, 2019 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 4650 N. Shadeland Avenue, with visitation starting at 10am.

Carl is survived by his wife Rita, and six children; Christine Jackson (Stan), Kathleen, Carl (Brenda), Steven, David (Bethany) and Daniel (Katie) and ten grandchildren; Cassie Gavioli (Wayne), David, Emily, Andrew, Julianne, Brian, Chloe, Benjamin, Adam and Samuel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Autism Society of Indiana, an organization very dear to his heart (autismsocietyofindiana.org).
