Charles Scott, 67, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2021 in Indianapolis Indiana.
He was born in 1954 in Harriman, Tennessee, to the late Frieda Ooten, Luther Scott and Mable Mayfield. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Indianapolis. Charlie lost his dad when he was 13, he has great memories of his grandma yelling at his dad. “Luther” do not whip that boy” Charlie is also preceded in death by his sister Joyce and brother Mark, with whom he had a great relationship. They both died too soon, but they are all together now.
He was married for 46 years to his bride Dianne, who survives him.
Charlie was a proud attendee of Howe High School, Dedicated Near Eastsider, Elder and Clerk of Session for Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a member for more than 48 years.
He was Employee Extraordinaire at The Tool Shed from 1987-2017 (until retirement) for John and Kurt.
But his favorite job was being a Papaw and Uncle Charlie. Some favorite memories are the trips to Indiana Beach with the grandkids, nieces and nephews. Camping adventures took him all over the state of Indiana including fishing and swimming as well as cooking over a fire. Growing up with this big family Uncle Charlie became like a dad not only to his 4 children but also to April and Amber after their father passed away too soon.
Charlie and Dianne visited every State Park in Indiana. They camped primarily until they got older (wiser) and stayed in cabins instead of a tent. Some favorite out of state trips to note are Virginia Beach, Walton’s Mountain, Memphis Tennessee and annual trips to visit Mom at MMM. Charlie might not have been a wealthy man but his love for adventures and traveling with his bride made them very rich.
He was an avid flea market treasure hunter for memorabilia of all things related to Tennessee, Raggedy Ann, and The Waltons. When Charlie retired, he would spend his days with his best cohort Anthony. The biggest decisions he would make in a day was which side of town they were going to drive to in order to find the next big treasure for the cheapest price.
Charlie was always there for his kids. We are all grownups now, but we always knew we could call him no matter what and he would be there for us. Dad would literally drive us and pick us up from school, Concerts, Band practice, Jobs, and our friend’s house. Charlie was so funny… he loved to tell a joke and make us laugh. He worked so hard to provide for us. He was the guy you could always depend on. He loved fried thick bologna sandwiches. He never asked for much. He wrote my mom love letters every day. He will be eternally missed by all of us, but especially Dianne.
In addition to his wife Dianne, Charlie is survived by his children Charles (Christie) Scott, Sally (Brian) Hunter, Sarah (Tony) Dall, and Anthony (Jordyn) Scott.
He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews Crystal, Jason, Mark, and Wendy and his grandchildren Seantaiu, Epiphany, Elliot, Neal, Kayla, Vinesha, Vindell, Elijah, Mekenzie, and Odin.
Music was always important to Charlie. Some of his all-time favorites are The Grateful Dead, John Prine, Bob Dylan and The Beatles. Charlie was a wonderful guitar player but only for the lucky family members at home.
When I get to heaven
I’m gonna shake God’s hand
Thank Him for more blessings than one man can stand
Then I’m gonna get a guitar
And start a rock-n-roll band
Check into a swell hotel
Ain’t the afterlife grand?
And then I’m gonna get a cocktail
Vodka and ginger ale
Yeah, I’m gonna smoke a cigarette that’s nine miles long
I’m gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
‘Cause this old man is goin’ to town
