Clarence Rex Abbott, age 61, of Elwood, left this earth peacefully to be with his Lord, at Community Hospital Anderson on January 20, 2021 with his daughter Mandy beside him holding his hand. He was born on November 20, 1959 at Mercy Hospital in Elwood to Floyd Abbott and Leola Hobbs.
Rex was a graduate of Elwood High School. He later worked for State Plating, National Power Flow, guttering, Lord Corp, and PAC. He would work wherever he could to support his family. Rex married the love of his life, Julie Harting, on June 25th, 1987. During his life, Rex served in the Indiana National Guard, and attended Frankton First United Methodist Church.
Rex had many hobbies throughout his life. Some of them included fishing, camping with family, playing with his kids and grandkids, and serving his Lord. Rex enjoyed being able to teach his kids and grandkids how to work on different things or build things from wood. He was an extremely dedicated dad and wanted his children to succeed in everything they did. A great work ethic was always so important to him and teaching his children and grandchildren that very same work ethic. He even had a “papaw boot camp” for all the kids. He deserves an honorary nursing license for his help in getting Mandy through nursing school. He enjoyed attending car shows on occasion. He and his cousin Tim Beeman even built a 1947 Studebaker.
Rex loved music. He played the bass and the drums in many different bands, some locally. Recently Rex started playing gospel with his bass at church. He was so proud to be a Christian and serve his Lord. It was extremely important to him to be the best he could and make a difference in peoples lives. He wanted to live his life with purpose and show meaning to others.
Rex had a wonderful personality, always joking and teasing with everyone around him. You never knew what he was going to say or do, but he sure did keep life exciting. He was a wonderful dad, husband, papaw, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
Rex is survived by his wife, Julie Abbot, of 33 years; children Rex Allen Abbott, Christy Abbott, Maranda “Mandy” Abbott, and Halie Abbott; grandchildren Dakota Abbott, Trinity Fleming, Peyton Fleming, Ruby Fleming, Joseph Cox, Alexa Kelly, Ashton Kelly, and Averi Kelly; great-grandchild Lyric Fleming; special nieces Kim Bell and LeeAnn Martz; siblings Robert “Bob” Abbott, Mike Abbott (Mary), Michelle Scholl, and special brother Bill Maggard; special granddaughter Stacia Simpson; brother-in-law Jesse Hamm; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents listed above; Father Eugene “Gene” Hobbs; sister Linda Hamm; and sister-in-law Linda Abbott.
Rex’s family and friends will host a Celebration of Life at a later date and will have full military honors. Cremation was chosen through Legacy Cremation and Funeral Service – Anderson.
