David M. Haver passed away in the early afternoon of September 17, 2020 at Sugar Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenfield IN. He was 71 years old. At the time of his passing, he was with staff members and a chaplain. Upon the chaplain saying a prayer and closing with “amen”, David took his final breath.
David was born on December 8, 1948 in Indianapolis IN. His parents Frederick “Fritz” and Hilda (Rosebrock) Haver predecease him.
Growing up on the east side of Indianapolis, David attended Christian Park School 82 and Thomas Carr Howe High School. David had artistic skills in drawing and attended classes at John Herron Art Institute. He also had musical skills, learning to play steel guitar and in high school played drums in the neighborhood garage band. In 1971 David graduated from trade school at St. Louis Technical Institution.
In 1966 at age 17 David enlisted with the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam era, receiving an honorable discharge in 1969. David was very proud of his military service and would often wear his veteran’s hat. The veterans benefit he earned would play a huge role in his health care at VA hospitals later in life.
In the years preceding his military service, David, along with his parents and brother, was active at Friedens United Church of Christ at the original building on the near south side of Indianapolis where his grandparents Fred and Henriette Rosebrock were charter members, continuing in 1964 with the new church building further south.
David was also active in Boy Scouts, DeMolay, and later became a Mason and a 32nd degree Shriner.
David lived in Louisiana for about 10 years starting in the mid 1970’s, marrying Pat Meaux and having two children, Jesica and Jason. A few years after returning to Indianapolis, he married Wanda Foster, a marriage that would last for about twenty-five years with David becoming a father to Christina and John. David used his construction skills working on their townhome on the east side of Indianapolis by upgrading windows, adding a deck in back, and a doggy door for their beloved dogs. They beautifully landscaped the back yard with a fish pond, fruit trees, plants, a swimming pool and would on special occasions invite friends to gather at their place.
Besides being a newspaper delivery boy, David’s first job was at the Claypool Hotel in downtown Indianapolis, at times helping his dad who was head chef at the hotel. While in Louisiana, David worked on an oil rig in the gulf. From 1987-1999 David ran his own business DMH Construction as an owner operator general contractor in commercial and residential construction. This was followed by various positions as a commercial truck driver.
David is survived by his sister Marcella “Bonnie” Pickard and brother-in-law William Pickard, brother Fred Haver, children Jason Haver and Jesica Lynn Lillie, stepchildren Christina Macy and John Rea, four grandchildren, nieces Suzanne Pickard, Deborah Thompson and nephews Brian and Michael Pickard.
