Fairmount, IN

Derek Andrew Hammontree, age 34, currently residing in Fairmount, Indiana, passed away suddenly on November 6, 2020 at his home. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on November 3, 1986.

Derek was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother and friend. He had an extreme passion for storm chasing; always studying the weather and tornadoes. He was very tech savvy, currently enrolled in school for IT. He was a major history buff, loving geography. Even though Derek never enlisted in the military, he was extremely patriotic and a proud American. He loved games; nobody could beat him in jeopardy. Anytime the University of Alabama was playing football, Derek was watching. He had many hobbies, but watching movies was close to his favorite. He had collected tons of movies throughout his life.  Derek loved when he worked as a truck driver because it allowed him to travel and see the different landscapes and experience different places. He could talk to anyone, not knowing a stranger. He was a proud dad and loved his children. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Derek is survived by his wife of 5 years, Kelsey Hammontree (Bowling); children Maleki Hammontree and Denver Johnson; Mom Denise Hammontree; sister Sarah “Nicki” Hammontree; grandma Carol Ratliff (Lamar); mother-in-law Debby Bowling; father-in-law Earl Bowling; sisters-in-law Kirby Bowling and Kelli Waldrep (Chris);  brothers-in-law Eli Bowling and Gavin Dillon-Bowling; grandma-in-law Nancy Shaul; and niece and nephews Kameron, Koltyn, and Kalleigh.

He is preceded in death by his grandpa Dan Hammontree and great-grandparents C.E. and Velma (Pairmore) Marler.
