Donald Willard Callahan, born on January 20, 1938, in Tipton, Indiana, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, in Anderson, Indiana surrounded by his family. A devoted family man and a dedicated soldier, Donald’s life was marked by a profound commitment to service, both to his country and to his loved ones.
A proud graduate of Anderson High School, Donald went on to serve in the United States Army, where he exemplified the values of courage and discipline. After his military service, he transitioned to a fulfilling career with the State of Indiana, where he made lasting contributions over many years. Known affectionately among his colleagues as “1st Sergeant,” Donald left a memorable impact on all who worked alongside him.
Donald was exceptionally attentive and loving, traits that defined his interactions with family and friends alike. He took great joy in his role as a grandfather, never missing an opportunity to attend his grandchildren’s ball games, always cheering them on from the sidelines. His storytelling ability brought laughter and warmth to gatherings, and his dedication to family fostered an atmosphere of love and unity.
An avid outdoorsman, Donald enjoyed fishing, camping, and yard work, which provided him the perfect backdrop to connect with nature and his loved ones. His passion for the outdoors mirrored his vibrant spirit and sense of adventure.
Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Charlotte Callahan; son David L. Callahan (Traci); grandchildren Donald Joseph "DJ" Callahan (Shaunthea), David Frances Callahan, and Kimberly Elise Valentine (Derrick); greatgrandchildren Judah, Colton, Ellie, Claire, and Reese; brother John Callahan; several nieces and nephews; brother and sister-in-law Gene and Trudy Coffey and sister-in-law Shirley Callahan.
He is preceded in death by his father Roy Smith; mother Isabelle Smith; son Donald Roy Callahan; and brothers Max and David Callahan.
A Celebration of Life to honor Donald Willard Callahan will be held on February 24, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM and concluding at 12:00 PM, at Legacy Cremation and Funeral Services - Anderson, 504 W 9th St, Anderson, IN 46016. A private burial will take place at a later date.
Donald’s memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him, as he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering commitment to family and friends.
