Edith Mayrene Brown, affectionately known as Nanny, passed away on August 2, 2023, in Indianapolis, IN, at the age of 85.
She was born on August 18, 1937, in Somerset, KY, to her late parents Dellen and Etta Whitaker.
Nanny, a woman of remarkable character, had a zest for life that was truly infectious.
She had a delightful sense of humor and a love for coffee that was unmatched. Nanny would often say,
Give me coffee and nobody will get hurt.” Her warm and welcoming nature made her a beloved figure in her community.
Nanny had a wide range of interests and hobbies. She had a talent for sewing and spent countless hours creating beautiful garments for her loved ones.
Her nimble fingers and creative mind brought joy to those who wore her creations. Additionally, Nanny found solace in the world of literature.
She would often lose herself in the pages of a good book, finding comfort and inspiration within the stories.
In her later years, Nanny discovered a new passion for playing video games. She would spend hours immersed in virtual worlds, challenging herself and finding excitement
in the digital realm. Her enthusiasm for gaming was infectious, and she often bonded with her grandchildren over their shared love for this modern form of entertainment.
Nanny will be deeply missed by her surviving sister, Patricia Vincent, and her children, Casper Brown, Ray Brown, Joseph Brown, and Ashley Spalding.
She was a loving grandmother to James Bennett Brandon Brown, Desiree, Teresa, Rebecca, and Lauren Brown. Nanny also leaves behind great-grandchildren Madison Abbott,
Makenzie Brown, Braxton and Kylie McKinney, and Aurora Alexander.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dellen and Etta Whitaker, her brothers Gerald, James, Willard, and Dellen Jr., her daughter Cathy Bennett,
and her son James Morgan.
Nanny’s memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends. Her vibrant spirit, kind heart, and unwavering love will continue to inspire
