Gene Phillip Hummel, born on July 5, 1939, in Clay County, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, in Anderson, Indiana. He was a stalwart of his community a dedicated worker, and a loving family man.

Gene devoted over 60 years of his life to Ameriturf in Chesterfield, where his work ethic became a hallmark of his character. Even after his retirement, he continued to wear his work clothes daily, a testament to his unwavering commitment to hard work and the pride he took in his long-standing career. Gene's colleagues and friends admired him for his reliable nature and strong sense of responsibility.

Beyond his professional life, Gene was known for being a wonderful neighbor to everyone who lived beside him. He cherished the simple pleasures that life offered, finding joy in everyday moments. His personality shone through in his love for his family, always prioritizing those dear to him above all else. He was more than just a neighbor; he was a friend to many, embodying the spirit of community with his kindness and generosity.

Gene had a passion for exploring the great outdoors. He often spent his time venturing out to collect arrowheads, which he found fascinating. He also enjoyed mushroom hunting and fishing, activities that allowed him to connect with nature and appreciate its beauty. These hobbies brought him joy and relaxation, enriching his life in ways that truly mattered to him.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Betty Sue Hummel; son Danny Hummel; granddaughter Tarrah Hummel; great-grandkids Lexi (David), Elaina, Navaeh, and DJ; great-great grandchildren Harmoni and Xoi; brothers Razelle Hummel and RD Hummel; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

He is preceded in death by his parents Edward and Martha (Cherry) Hummel; siblings Willy Ray Hummel, MB Hummel, Connie Taylor, Charlotte Foster, Junior Hummel; and several cousins. 

A graveside service will be held on Monday April 14, 2025, at 2pm at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery. 

Gene Phillip Hummel leaves behind a legacy of dedication, warmth, and a love for family that will be remembered by all who knew him. His contributions as a community member and a devoted family man leave an indelible mark on the hearts of many. He will be profoundly missed.
