Helen Swenson

Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, 92, who passed into God’s loving arms on August 23rd, 2020.

Born in Little Falls, Minnesota on June 6th, 1928. Helen grew up on Pillsbury Lake, where her family farm was located. Graduating from Swanville High school, Helen was Salutatorian of her class. She took business classes in the big town of Minneapolis and found clerical work there.

Helen met her husband, Kermit Swenson, on a blind date in Minneapolis. A match that lasted 66 years. They were married in Swanville, Minnesota on August 18th, 1951. The couple moved to Mitchell, South Dakota before coming to Indianapolis. After coming to Indiana, Helen was employed at a car dealership doing pay roll and company books. Helen and Kermit joined Brightwood United Methodist Church and remained members there until joining Old Bethel in 1967.

In her new church home, Helen taught preschool for over 20 years. She not only understood children, but loved watching them learn and grow. When Helen retired, she had grandchildren of her own to love, teach, and mentor. Helen also loved gardening; she could grow anything. We teased her by saying she could put a pencil in the ground and it would bud. There was much enjoyment in planting flowers to attract butterflies and birds.

Full of love for God, she will be in our heart’s forever.

She was preceded in peace by her husband, Kermit Swenson; her brothers: Charlie, Elmer, and Howard Mortensen; and by her sisters: Lucille Olson and Hazel Wilson.

She is survived by her brothers: Lester and Arthur Mortensen; children: Eric Swenson Sr., Kimberly (Grant) Davis, and Kristina Swenson; grandchildren: Eric Swenson Jr., Greigh Davis, Forest (Kaleigh) Davis, William (Ami) Welch, and Anna Swenson (Justin Littell).

Services at Old Bethel United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. Visitation starts at 10:30AM and service starts at 11:30AM.
