Mr. James "Jl" L. Whitney

James L. Whitney ‘J.L.’, 92, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at Hamilton Trace Rehabilitation Center in Fishers, Indiana.  A resident of Indianapolis since early 1950’s.  The first of five children, he was born on November 30, 1928 in Westmoreland, Tennessee to Delbert H. Whitney and Virgie B. Whitney.

In 1945 he married Betty J. Porter in Franklin, Kentucky on August 31^{st .}and they enjoyed 70 years of marriage during which they had four children.   J.L. was a retired printing press operator from Inland Container where he worked for over 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, gardening, and cards.

He is preceded in death by his wife Betty J (Porter) Whitney on August 26, 2015, sons Gary Whitney on June 18, 1999, Roger Whitney on Jan 10, 2011,  and his brother Virgil Whitney on February 2, 2014.

J.L. is survived by his son Elder James D. Whitney (daughter-in-law Brenda), and daughter Melinda ‘Mendy’ Rosa(son-in-law Mark); grandchildren,  Kimberli S. Whitney, Elder James A. Whitney (wife Sandra), Jeremy W. Whitney (wife Natasha), James “Michael” Gish (wife Christina), Kaitlyn Rae Rosa, and Jonas Clay Rosa; great-grandchildren,Anthony Sherwood (wife Ashley), Sidney R Gish (wife Rachel), Samantha Whitney, Mica R. Guyer, Jennifer Whitney,Harli Whitney, Shane Guyer, Shelby Whitney, Kristen Whitney, Rylee Chaffin, and John Whitney; great-great-grandchildren Peter John “P.J.” Garcia, Estera Sherwood, and soon to be born Liam Gish; Siblings Clara Smith, Virginia “Gin” McDole (husband Kenneth), and Thomas Whitney (wife Emma).

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 11th 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services, 1604 W. Morris St., Indianapolis.  Funeral services will begin at 2:00PM, officiated by Elder Jeff Elliott.  Interment will be at Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.
