John Andrew Harrold Sr.

John Andrew Harrold Sr., 82, of Cumberland, IN, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, June 7, 2020. He was born on July 11, 1937 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Virgil and Naomi Harrold. John graduated from Elmhurst High School in Fort Wayne, IN and received 2 Master Degrees from Indiana University, one in Geography and the other in Political Science. John first worked as a public-school teacher. For 25 years, he worked tirelessly for the state of Indiana in the Department of Education in a variety of executive level positions, including Director of Curriculum. For his dedication to the state of Indiana, Governor O’Bannon awarded him the Sagamore of the Wabash, an honorary award for individuals who have contributed greatly to Hoosier heritage.
John served his country in the Army from his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in 1961 until he left as Major in 1981.
John was an active member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church. He was active in his community and served two consecutive terms as President of the Cumberland Town Council. He also served others through mission work oversees and at home. John loved trying to make things better for the current and future generations.
John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anna Harrold; children, John Harrold Jr. and his wife, Wendy, and Rebekah Overbey and her husband, Kenny; grandchildren, John Harrold III and Caden Overbey; sister, E. Joanna Ginzel and step brother, David Mueller.
He is preceded in death by his parents, mentioned above, his brother, Dave Harrold and his sister, Ruth Harrold.
He was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
Services will be private. John’s final resting place will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Old Bethel United Methodist Church, https://www.oldbethel.org/online-giving.
