John House

February 20, 1942 — November 21, 2024

John Hammons House, a beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on November 21, 2024, at the age of 82. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, John grew up in the Lockfield neighborhood of Indianapolis and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. He was the son of the late Roweena Lillian Hyde Wooten.

John was known for his warm, charismatic personality and his ability to connect with people. As a young man, his humor, charm, and radiant energy made him a magnet for friendship. These traits served him well during his 20+ years working as a bus driver for Metro, now IndyGo, where he made lasting friendships and left an indelible mark on those he worked with and served.

A man of many talents, John had a wide range of passions that he pursued with great enthusiasm. He had a deep love for horses, both riding and teaching others to ride. Music was another of his great loves, and in his 20s, he signed a record deal with RCA Paramount Records as part of the group The Crystals. John’s musical talent was matched by his creative eye for photography, which later became one of his most cherished hobbies. He specialized in wildlife photography, particularly capturing the majesty of bald eagles, with many of his works showcased throughout Indianapolis.

John was a loving father, survived by his eight children: Cynthia Williams, Christopher House, Nikita House-Lynch, Rachel Fatyanov, Nicole House, Danyelle House, Elijah House, and Jonah House. He was also the cherished brother of Andrea, and his warmth, love, and humor will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Through the years, John shared an unbreakable bond with his best friend, Cheryl Kelley. Together, they enjoyed many years of friendship, shared interests, and the love of their two pugs, Charley and Bella. Cheryl’s unwavering loyalty, kindness, and compassion were a comfort to John in his final days, and we are thankful that she was by his side when he passed.

A memorial service will be held in John’s honor on Monday, December 2, 2024, from 10 AM to Noon at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services, located at 5215 N. Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46226. The viewing will be from 10 to 11 AM, followed by a service at 11 AM.

We love you, Daddy. Enjoy Heaven and watch over us.
