John O. Maynard

John O. Maynard passed away June 28, 2017 in Anderson at Providence Nursing Facility. He was born to James and Hazel (Abney) Maynard on September 12, 1930 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

John graduated Mississinewa High School where he was one of the starting five on the varsity basketball team. He married his high school sweetheart, Teddy Wheeler, then joined the United States Marines and served in the Korean War. Upon returning, John worked at Glass Containers in Gas City until his retirement in 1983. He also served as a volunteer fireman in Gas City.
John was a Marine through and through, impressing his grandchildren by doing fingertip push-ups. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion.
Most important, John was a devoted family man. The family always looked forward to the yearly vacations at a lake cottage with swimming, fishing, and his great cooking. He was a jokester, but his love of his wife and family always came first. After retirement, John took up golfing and at one point hit more balls off of the tee than anyone else at the course.
John is the father of eight children and step-children, Delana Davis (deceased), Deby (Jack) Burns, Fawn Davis, Dwayne (Chuyu Lin) Kelley, Barbara (David) Dunfee, Ronald (Sherrie) Kelley, Robin (Linda) Kelley, and Mary (Todd) Haynes; seventeen grandchildren and step-grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Dick (Bunny) Maynard, Jerry Maynard, Susie (Jim) Bowman), and Nancy (Donald) Huff; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his daughters, Teddy Wheeler Maynard; loving wife of thirty years, Jo Ann Spivey Maynard; daughter, Delana Davis; grandson, John Brindenthal; his parents; and siblings, Bill, Marion, Joe, Charlotte, Martha, Jack, and Bob.
Services with Military Honors are Friday at 2:00 at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services in Anderson. Visitation is two hours prior.
