INDIANAPOLIS – Joseph Nicholas Carey, 90, passed away in his home on Friday, January 11 after a short illness. He was born August 25, 1928 in Tenafly, New Jersey and moved his family to Indianapolis in 1973.
Joe is survived by his sons, Stephen and Andrew “Drew” (Reed Drake); his grandson, Matthew Carey (Agne), Huntsville, Alabama; his sister, Anne Diggins, Cresskill, New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and son, Philip.
He was an active member in his parish, St. Lawrence, and was a 40-year volunteer with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, as a driver; distribution center worker; phone dispatcher and scheduler; home visitor; and, finally, when he was unable to do more physical work at age 85, he cleaned the bathrooms and brought doughnuts for the volunteers. Joe served as president of the St. Lawrence and Indianapolis Councils of St. Vincent de Paul and served on the elder committee of the national St. Vincent de Paul organization. He was also honored in 2012 as Volunteer of the Year for his volunteer service to the Central Indiana Council on Aging.
Service to the poor was a cornerstone of his Catholic faith.
Visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services, 5215 N. Shadeland Avenue, with a Vigil service and rosary starting at 7pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11am on Friday, January 18, 2019 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 4650 N. Shadeland Avenue, with visitation one hour prior. The Rite of Committal immediately follows at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Indianapolis Council.
