Joyce LaRae (Nielson) Black passed away from cancer on 1/25/2022. She was born on 3/28/1948 in LaGrande, Oregon to Venoy and Opal (Barzee) Nielson. After high school she served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Sheridan in Chicago. It is here where she met the love of her life, Carl W. Black. She was a devoted stay-at-home mom, and when she had the opportunity she was able to work part-time in her community. She also felt continuing her education was important so she earned her Associates in Accounting degree from IUPUI.
To her immediate family she is lovingly known as LaRae, but to everyone else she is Joyce. She loved to be creative and had a talent for art, crafts, and sewing. She made everything from wedding dresses, Halloween costumes, clothing, cheerleading uniforms, curtains, ornaments, and extra pockets for her purses and bags. She also made beautiful quilts for family and friends. Joyce loved serving in her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her favorite callings were the ones where she could teach. She would start preparing as soon as she received the assignment and put 110% into making sure the lesson was factual, interesting, fun, spiritual, and engaging. Joyce had a love for chocolate, movie nights, experiencing new restaurants, and was always up for a good laugh. She was friendly, selfless, thoughtful, giving, and loved serving others. She had a firm testimony of Christ and remained strong in her faith throughout her life.
Joyce is survived by her five children, Karrie Hinkle (the late David Hinkle), Janel Jordan (Eric), Adrian (Debbie), Austin (Andrea), and Becky Black (Joseph Wanagel); her two brothers Nolan Nielson (Rosemary), Danny Nielson (Maria), 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces, including Linda Marie (Nielson) Howell, who was more like a daughter than a niece. Her sister Jeneva Sanders (Mark) preceded her in death.
There will be a viewing on Saturday 2/5/2022 from 9am-11am and funeral services following from 11am- 12pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 11220 E. 30th St. in Indianapolis. Joyce will be buried at Memorial Park Cemetery at 9350 E. Washington St, Indianapolis, IN following the funeral service.
