Leslie Allynn Bonnette (née Rusch), age 73, passed away on March 29, 2025, in Anderson, Indiana. Born on May 16, 1951, in Wisconsin, Leslie lived a life defined by resilience, passion, and deep devotion to both family and animals.
Leslie was the beloved daughter of Allan Rusch and Janet Eleanor Salminas. She is lovingly remembered by her sisters Jane Gillespie (husband Roger), Lisa Brown, and Nuria Root; her son Larry (wife Kelley); her grandchildren Canyon, Connor (wife Tearani), Jackson, and Jersey; and her great-granddaughter Avy, the sparkle in her eye. Her legacy lives on through each of them.
A trailblazer in her professional life, Leslie became a mechanic during a time when women were rarely seen or respected in the field. Undeterred by societal expectations, she forged a successful career with Sears before dedicating over three decades to General Motors at the Desert Proving Grounds in Mesa, Arizona. Her work ethic and determination left an indelible mark on those who worked alongside her.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Leslie’s heart belonged to the animals she cherished throughout her life. An avid animal lover with a special fondness for horses, dogs, and cats, she found immense joy in raising and caring for them. Her pride and joy was Mystical Tale—a horse she bred herself and was present for at his birth. Mystical Tale was raised to be a hunter jumper and returned to retire with Leslie after his career ended. Their bond remained unbroken until his passing just months before hers.
Leslie also poured her love into Achin Acres Jack Russell Terrier Kennel. Many who knew her will remember her dedication to the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America (JRTCA) and the spirited dogs she raised with care and expertise. Her involvement extended beyond breeding—she was deeply committed to the well-being of these animals and built lasting connections within the community.
Her compassion reached even further through her participation in Secretariat festivals and efforts supporting the retirement of two Secretariat offspring—Krem and Cutie—whose care she helped ensure during their later years.
Through all of this, Leslie remained a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was central to her world, and she took great pride in watching it grow across generations.
A celebration of Leslie’s life will be held on what would have been her 74th birthday—May 16, 2025—at the family farm in Anderson, Indiana. Those unable to attend in person are invited to reach out via this obituary or contact Larry or Kelley Stockton for remote participation options.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Mims Retirement Haven (https://ourmims.org/donate/) or your local humane society—causes close to Leslie’s heart.
May Leslie’s memory bring comfort to those who knew them and continue to inspire strength, compassion, and love for all living beings.
