Mickey Sharon McColly, educator and community activist, has died on January 22, 2021, at the age of 88. Born in Marion, Indiana, to James Patrick (Mick) Malloy and Irma Malloy (nee Davis) of Gas City, Indiana, where she graduated from Mississinewa High School. After graduating from Indiana University and raising children, she worked as a social worker while obtaining her MA in Education. She taught special education in the Indianapolis Public Schools, primarily at Crispus Attucks High School. Mickey was active as a volunteer through much of her adult life, teaching reading to inmates at the state prison, developing one of Indianapolis’ first social service hotlines for women, as well as organizing voter registration drives for the League of Women Voters. She was also a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis and its Service Committee.
Married to Bill McColly, the late, long-time educator and high school principal in Lawrence Community Schools, together they enjoyed their grandchildren, gardening, and traveling the world.
Mickey is survived by her three children, educators themselves, Jo-Ellen Ash and her husband, David Ash, (of Indianapolis), Julie Hill and her husband Ted Hill, (of Indianapolis), and Michael McColly, (of Chicago), as well as four grand-children, and four great grand children.
