Mrs. Nora Lee Morris Powell, affectionately known as “The Cake Lady” was born on May 3, 1936, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Wayne E. Morris, Sr., and Nora L. Phillips Morris. She was one of eight children born to this union.
Nora lived in Indianapolis, Indiana all her life. She completed her primary and secondary education in local Indianapolis Public Schools. She graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. In 1959, Nora was united in holy matrimony to Charles F. Powell, Jr. who preceded her in death. Unto this union two daughters were born. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Nora professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Friendship Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully for 65 years. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Matrons Ministry, and with the Senior Missionary Society for over 40 years. Nora was cherished by her church family, and she looked forward to worshiping with her church family every chance she got. She was a faithful Christian woman and witness for Christ. She demonstrated her faith through her testimonial words, her attitude towards others by serving in the community, and her faithful “Holy Ghost shout”. She would help anyone without hesitation. If you told her, “I Love You” she would always respond by saying, “Love You More”.
Nora was employed at Sears at Lafayette Square Mall where she later retired. Her hobby was baking. She enjoyed baking so much that she became known as “The Cake Lady”. Her specialty cakes were lemon glazed, pound, and sock-it-to-me cakes. She often said, “here’s a cake for you, love you babe.” Nora also volunteered at the Wishard Memorial Hospital for 15 years. She also served with the Indianapolis Girl School Christmas Program each year and would take them sweet treats, gifts, and ministered to them about the love of Jesus.
Mrs. Nora Lee Morris Powell departed this life to be with our heavenly Father on Monday, July 11, 2022. Six of her siblings preceded her in death: brothers, Wayne Jr., Huron L., and John M. Morris; sisters, Hester G. Landers, Dorothy D. Morris, and Thelma M. Byrd.
Her memories will be cherished by her two daughters: Regina (Clarence) Ewing, Jenean (Noble) Smith Sr.; her twin sister, Ora Lee Baker; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of beloved and devoted friends. She will always be remembered for her praise and worship and her delicious cakes. She will be missed deeply by all who had the privilege to know and love her. As always, from Nora “Love You More”.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for memorial contributions made in memory of Nora Powell to Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 1301 N. Goodlet Ave. Indianapolis, Indiana 46222.
