Pamela Suzanne Hall Gaither
Pamela Gaither, loving wife, supportive sister, terrific aunt, and generous friend passed away December 29, 2021. Pam was a lifelong Hoosier. She graduated from Lawrence Central High School (LC) in 1973 and after graduating from Indiana University with a major in Science and education, returned to LC to teach science and coach cheerleading. Pamela loved learning and teaching thus she continued to reinvent herself several more times. She returned to Indiana University and obtained a BS RN. She started nursing in the adult ICU where she enjoyed helping first time interns survive their rotation in the ICU. A moment of supreme pride in the ICU came when she identified a patient with Locked-in Syndrome and the medical team was able to aggressively treat this patient who a year later came back to the ICU bearing gifts for Pam who she credited with saving her life. She left the ICU to help start a medical billing company which she ran for several years until the call to serve patients became so loud that she returned to bedside nursing. She joined Rehab Hospital of Indiana as a floor nurse and retired in 2019 as the Program Director of Brain injury and Stroke. Her skills honed at RHI helped her care for her husband, James Gaither M.D. after he suffered a debilitating stroke. Pam and Jim enjoyed camping, mission trips and most of all helping people in need. They opened their house, her kitchen, and their hearts to people year around as a respite from the world and a place to begin again. Pam was an accomplished quilter and many people were beneficiaries of her quilts. She particularly loved making baby blankets and always had a quilt in the making on the machine. Pam’s caring heart will be missed the most. Her last selfless act was to be an organ donor. She has joined her parents Jack Huett and Donna Lou in Heaven and undoubtedly is already caring for others. She leaves behind husband, Jim, her sister, Paula Hall and her brother-in-law, Mike Raymond, her brother and sister-in-law, Jack Joseph and Donna Hall, Brazilian sister, Marivana Virga, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Christine Gaither, and nephews and nieces, Michael, Ali, Jennifer, Jarrett, Jack, Hillary, Zachary, John, Juliana, Marisa, and Brendan, her RHI family, golden retriever Novi and too many friends to mention.
Inurnment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery. In the abundance of caution and recognizing that Pam would not want to unnecessarily expose anyone to COVID there will be no public visitation. Please leave online remembrances on this website. In lieu of flowers, Pam requested you make a charitable gift to the RHI Foundation Mission Priorities Fund in loving memory to Pamela Gaither. Donations can be mailed to RHI Foundation 441 Shore Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46254, online at www.rhirehab.com/rhi-foundation, or to the Indianapolis Humane Society. If we all were a little bit more like Pam the world would be a better place!
