Beloved son and brother Richard Otto Bruce Bakemeier passed away on May 27, 2020 at the age of 61.
Rick was born on December 21, 1958 to Robert Edward Bakemeier and Joyce Marie Locke Bakemeier
at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Rick, also known as Bruce, was an adventurous youth, and enjoyed spending summers at the family
cottage on Basswood Lake in Canada. He was an accomplished water skier and was known for
jumping off the “cliffs” into the lake. He attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School and Lawrence
Central High School, and took courses at Indiana University.
He joined the Army (1988-1989), and trained at Fort Dix as a helicopter repairman, serving in the 39th
Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Company B339. He earned two sharpshooter badges and an aircraft
crewman badge. In 1992, he joined the National Guard.
Rick was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was also a life member of Mensa, joining
the organization in June 1990, and was known for his long, erudite correspondence that quoted from
such varied sources as Shakespeare, Thomas Aquinas, and Thomas Jefferson.
Rick was known for his hard work, attention to detail, intelligence and generosity.
Rick passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Indianapolis on May 27, 2020.
Predeceased by his father, he is survived by his mother, Joyce, and sisters Janet and Nancy and brother
Robert.
