Shirley Burnett, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, left this world on October 30, 2024, at Indiana University West Hospital in Avon, Indiana. Born on April 4, 1946, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Shirley graced the earth with her quiet strength and unyielding love for her family and friends.
A professional, Shirley retired from Carrier, where she served as a Team Leader. After retirement, she worked as a school bus monitor for the Decatur Township School District. Her life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the boundless capacity to provide for her loved ones as she raised two daughters as a single mother.
Shirley's life was rich with passions and interests. She relished in the simple joys of life, the most important joy in her life was her family. She was a true matriarch of the family. Her simple yet rewarding hobbies included browsing through yard sales, tending to her beloved flowers, love of shopping or journeying to the mountains of Tennessee. She was also a talented cook, remembered fondly for her cherished recipes, including Peach Cobbler, Bread Dressing for Thanksgiving, and the delectable Cast Iron Corn Bread.
The tapestry of Shirley's life was woven with the pride she held for her family. She is survived by her two daughters, Vicky Lewis (Morris Trueblood) and Michele Standefer, and shared bonds with her siblings: Charles (Lena) Bray, Terry (Rhonda) Bray, and Allen (Dixie) Bray. Her legacy continues through her granddaughter, Felecia Lewis, and her great-granddaughter, Mahayla, and several stepbrothers and sisters. These relationships were her proudest accomplishments, offering her moments of unmeasurable happiness and fulfillment.
Shirley now joins those who have departed before her, including her parents, Alfred and Dorothy Bray, her sister, Joyce Stepp, her grandson, Jordan Lewis, and her cherished fur baby, Coco. Although she may have spoken few words, her presence resonated deeply, and her love will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her.
