Terry Russell, 77, passed away on October 2, 2024. He was born on July 1, 1947, and lived a life filled with purpose and commitment to both his family and his community. He was the eldest of 9 siblings, a proud father, and loving husband, cherished by his wife, Linda, and his children, William, George, and MJ.
Terry's life journey was profoundly shaped by his military service. He served honorably in the Army for seventeen years and later continued his commitment as a civilian in the Department of Defense for an additional seventeen years. His time stationed at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in 1978 marked the beginning of a lifelong dedication to his community and country.
Throughout his life, Terry was known for his ambition and passion for craftsmanship. He enjoyed working with his hands creating detailed World War II models of tanks, armored vehicles, and aircraft. He also enjoyed learning about woodworking and creating carousel animals. His creativity and attention to detail were hallmarks of his work, expressing his love for both art and history.
Beyond his craftsmanship, Terry had a profound connection with his community. He dedicated more than twenty years of service with the USS Excalibur, where he made lasting friendships and contributions to a variety of causes with the cities of Lawrence and Indianapolis, and his fellow veterans. He participated in the annual Fourth of July parade and Halloween Hayride, showcasing his vibrant spirit and enthusiasm for community celebrations. Terry also volunteered with the Boy Scouts, guiding young individuals, and helping to instill values of responsibility and leadership. Known fondly as Santa during the holiday season, he brought joy and warmth to countless families, embodying the spirit of giving and kindness.
An admirer of John Wayne’s private and stoic cowboy persona, Terry found enjoyment in classic films that reflected strength and resilience. His love for history and nature led him to travel, allowing him to immerse himself in the beauty and stories that the world has to offer.
