Timothy “Tim” McCarthy, Sr.

Timothy C. McCarthy, a gifted vocalist, left this Earth to sing with the angels on December 14, 2017. Born on March 22, 1943 in Lake Shore, MD to Burton and Elda McCarthy, Tim grew up there and Ravenswood WV, where he was a standout football player. He graduated from Marshall University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and economics. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and served as his chapter’s president.

Upon graduation Tim was inducted into the U.S. Army, completed Officer Candidate School, Transportation Division and attained the rank of Captain. He was assigned to Mannheim Germany for much of his Army career, serving as officer in charge of the Traffic Management Office. Tim received many awards for his service to his country including the American Spirit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal before his honorable discharge in 1971.

An entrepreneur, he owned several businesses, including a plaque manufacturing and sports memorabilia company before retiring in 2005. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, but also enjoyed discussing politics, taking care of his yard, telling jokes and listening to music.

Tim is survived by Helen, his wife of 31 years, along with three sons Tim Jr. (Angie), Tom (Emilia) and Sean (Amanda) and three grandchildren Benen, Connie and Sophia. He also has three surviving brothers Burton, Greg and Tom and a sister Pat. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ken and Mike and sister Kathleen.

A memorial service will be held on January 27, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services - Lawrence, 5215 N. Shadeland Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, Tim asked that donations be made for his grandchildren’s college expenses. Checks can be made payable to Helen McCarthy and she will distribute equally to the three grandchildren.
