Velva Dean (Dusty) Brand

85, passed away peacefully at Westminster Village North on 8 June 2017 where she had resided for three and a half years. She was born on 2 May 1932 in Washington, Indiana to the late Bomer and Helen Lucas.


She is survived by her husband of 48 years Robert D. Brand and seven children; Max E. Miller (Susie), Fairfax Station, Va., Mark E. Miller (Katherine), Indpls, Marsha E. Miller, Gainsville, GA., Michael E. Miller (Anne), Nashville, IN., Roberta F. (Miller) Bretzlaff (George), Indpls, Lynne M. (Brand) Jackson (Kirk), Indpls and Robert Scott Brand (Jessica), Carmel, IN. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A sister Ardella Grove survives in Bloomington, IN. Dusty was preceded in death by a brother Bomer Lee Lucas.
Dusty, a very avid quilter was a joyful, respectful, determined and loving wife, parent, and friend. During her lifetime she was employed as a waitress, in manufacturing and the TV design engineering office of the RCA and later in the cafeteria at Lawrence Central High School. Finally, she drove Lawrence township school buses for 27 years before retiring in 1992 at age 70. For the last ten years of her driving career she drove a bus for wheelchair and special needs children and loved every minute with them. Her greatest accomplishment, however, was her own children and their children who have all become very successful due to the encouragement and work ethic she instilled in them.
Dusty and Bob were boaters and campers and spent many long vacations and weekends on beautiful Dale Hollow Lake. They also are 42 year members of the Indianapolis Yacht Club.
Her funeral will be held at 3 PM on Friday 16 June 2017. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until the time of service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity. Interment will be later at Washington Park East Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services – 5215 N. Shadeland Ave., Lawrence.
