Verla Faye Hannaford
98, of Anderson, passed away August 20,2016. Verla was born in Burnt Prairie,Illinois on June 2, 1918 to the late James and Maggie Gwaltney.
Verla was a selfless and giving person, with a nurturing side. Her life was all about her family, immediate and adopted. Verla was an avid euchre player, having bi-weekly tournaments with her friends at their homes. She liked to play 42 (dominos) with her family. Verla traveled a lot with he rhusband, John, all over the United States. She also enjoyed mowing her grass, taking care of her garden, baking and shopping. Verla cared about everyone, especially her neighbors and her adopted grandchildren, whom she helped nurture for the past 25+ years and they lovingly referred to as “Aunt Woodie”.
Verla was a loving and devoted spouse, even after her husband’s passing, sister, adopted aunt and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory: siblings,Dorothy “Dot” Kegg and Roy “Wayne” Gwaltney (Sue); “adopted” son, Ron Carpenter(Julia); “adopted” grandchildren, Jacob Carpenter, Clare Olsen (Matt), AlexJacobson, Natalie Jacobson, and Nathan Carpenter, and many nieces andnephews.
Verla was preceded in death by her: husband and parents; and siblings,Raymond Gwaltney, Ervin Gwaltney, Herschel Gwaltney, and Edie Norbury.
Services will be 2pm on Monday, August 29, 2016 at Legacy Cremation& Funeral Services, 504 W. Ninth Street, with visitation from 12pm until the time of service. Burial to follow at Anderson Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity in memory of Verla.
